What is HDR?

2:08 pm News and Society

HDRI or High Dynamic Range Imaging was originally used in 3-D but now is used in photography. It is a process of taking multiple images and merging them together into a single image. Using this process, you can capture all the beautiful attributes of what you are shooting instead of losing them with shutter speed. For instance, with one picture, depending on the lighting, you might lose detail with something that is darker than what you are focusing on. Reverse that, and you again lose the detail. By taking multiple exposures and merging them together, you get one beautifully detailed photograph.

There are many different software that allow you to create HDR photographs. One of the best ones out there and is usually required by any photographer creating HDR photographs, is Photomatix Pro. A few hdr tutorials out there have a discount code that you can use to receive a discount off of the regular price of the software. The second and most popular among photographers is Photoshop. Photoshop is a great way to clean up any images you complete with Photomatix Pro. An optional software that is a noise reduction software is Noiseware Professional. Again, some hdr tutorials online have a discount code that you can use to receive an additional percent off. Another software to use after your image in complete and you want to add a little flare is Topaz Adjust. You can also get the Topaz Photoshop Bundle which will allow you to do many other things with it as well.

So which cameras are best for HDR photography? Usually Digital SLRs such as the Nikons or Canons will do the best job. These also have multiple lenses to choose from for making shooting brilliant images much easier.

One of the most important things to get along with your camera is a quality tripod. There is no use in trying to create HDR photographs when your images aren’t lining up correctly because your tripod sunk a little or you have a shaky hand.

The Internet is your friend and there are multiple hdr tutorials out there to help you along the way and also tutorials for each software being used.

HDR Imaging isn’t every body’s cup of tea but in the end they can create beautiful images that allow you to see everything in sharp contrast. There are even HDR photographs hanging in the Smithsonian. Once you get the hang of making these photographs, you will have a hard time going back to anything else. Allow others to view the world through a different perspective with HDR photography.
