Most college students who apply for an international internship do so for the opportunity to live abroad and gain valuable career specific experience. Sometimes, these international opportunities, especially ones that have affiliations with organizations abroad are located in the United States. Many of these opportunities can be found in larger cities such as New York, or Washington D.C. Commonly, though, these internships and volunteer opportunities are often found in locations overseas. Many of these opportunities include teaching English overseas or other volunteering opportunities such as rebuilding homes and clean up efforts during times of natural disaster. Many of these opportunities will offer college credit toward the college student’s degree.

Typically, the college student can get financial aid to assist in the cost of expenses of the international internship. Although most internships are unpaid, sometimes the student can apply for a program that offers paid work. Even though these volunteer opportunities may incur expenses for the student and his family, the benefits of participating in one can make the difference between  getting a lower paying entry level position and garnering a lucrative career opportunity. In addition, internships can offer the student work related experience and afford him the opportunity to see a different country.

Many volunteer programs and international internship opportunities provide room and board for the student. Paid internships are less plentiful than unpaid ones, however, they are still available, especially in the fields of engineering and business. For students seeking summer internships, applying during the fall months is best. Some volunteer or internship programs have application deadlines such as November or December and the international studying abroad programs usually have an application deadline of the semester prior to the internship.Many of these opportunities are sponsored by the colleges. The benefits of university sponsored internships are college credit and the ability to apply for financial aid.

Many federal agencies in the United States and abroad offer the unpaid international internship for graduate as well as undergraduate students. The application process is competitive  and the student needs to make sure that he applies before the deadline. Although most of these opportunities are unpaid, room and board are often provided. Students who have graduated from college that are interested in working overseas might want to consider the U.S Peace Corps. The Peace Corps. usually requires a bachelor’s degree and a 2 year commitment. In addition, they pay expenses and offer full support and training.
