Psychologists have created a profile for the everyday smoker. Extraversion is one trait that’s most connected with smoking. Smokers are risk taking, sociable, aggressive and impetuous. Though, social factors and personality may make people smoke, but the habit is a function of operant conditioning. During the initial stages, smoking provides enjoyable sensations (because of its action on the dopamine system) and so serves as a source of positive re-strengthening. After someone has smoked for a number of years, avoiding withdrawal symptoms and negative re-strengthening become the key factors. But have there been any studies on smokers that tend to light up only once a week? I know a lot of smokers that do not smoke everyday, are they less likely to have the same symptoms as a heavy smoker? If they do not feel that they have to have a smoke everyday, then what is driving them to even light up at all? It may be the flavor of moontrance cigars that they enjoy most, or the company that they are surrounded by while smoking. What is the Media’s Roll in Cigar Smoking? The media and Hollywood movies continue to further the false perceptions about cigar smoking. Print media of cigars was unjustifiably positive and did not let the general public know of the health risks involved. In research magazines and newspaper articles on cigars, only 4% targeted on the health effects of smoking. And in some articles, comparing cigars online with cigarettes, cigars were touted as less harmful to your health, and more acceptable, and as containing fewer chemicals than cigarettes. But, should we believe any of these perceptions that are being thrust on to us? My only concern is the lax attitude of the media about smoking, which can be very influential to teens and they sometimes target teens specifically to show how cool it would be to smoke.
