Car Loans and Bad Credit
March 15, 2010 4:09 am News and SocietyThere are many people out there these days that need a car but fear they won’t be able to get loans for bad credit. Luckily there a few vehicle lending programs that can still be used by those with bad credit.
One thing that must be considered before applying for a vehicle loan with loans bad credit is that the interest rate will be hirer than for those with good credit. The lender will look at income and expenses very closely to make sure that the payments can be met without causing undue hardship on the person applying for the loan.
There are two types of vehicle loans that can be given to those with bad credit. They are secured and unsecured vehicle loans. Secured vehicle loans are the safest for the lender because if the borrower forfeits on the loan the lender will have something, usually the vehicle, that they can take in place of the money that would have been paid on the loan.
Unsecured loans are more of a risk for lenders but for those individuals with credit that is moving upwards towards a better credit score or is not extremely bad this is sometimes an option that lenders will consider. Typically the borrower will pay higher interest rates, and ultimately a high final price for the vehicle, than those who obtain a secured loan for the same vehicle. Lenders may choose to go forward with an unsecured loan if the vehicle that is being purchased is worth less than the actual loan amount.
Most lenders who specialize in loans for those with bad credit are not located in banks or credit unions but can typically be found by doing online searches, referrals from friends and relatives, or through some other type of media like television or radio. Many of these lenders may charge fees along with the higher interest rates because of the added risk of lending to those with bad credit.
There are also a few companies that sell cars and do financing for those with bad credit all within the same company. Many of these companies advertise that they will sell vehicles on credit to those who make a certain amount of money each month and also meet other requirements like a telephone or having lived in their current home for a certain amount of time.
Regardless of which program a person with bad credit decides to use it’s sometimes comforting to know that, if something were to go wrong, there are options available for purchasing a vehicle while having bad credit.
